Singing

an early start

When I was six years old, I begged my mom to audition for a local variety show. She was a voice teacher at the time and all her students were trying their luck. She reluctantly taught me the song, “You Must’ve Been a Beautiful Baby”, curled my hair with old socks, bought me a frilly dress and patent leather Mary Janes. I got the gig and started singing in front of hundreds of people at live concerts, belting out old standards like “Bill Bailey Won’t You Please Come Home” and “Ain’t She Sweet.” We spent the following three years driving every Wednesday night into a Philadelphia studio to film an amateur variety show called “The Al Albert’s Showcase”. My mom would help me prepare a new song almost every week, I’d rehearse with the 4-piece band once and then film it in front of a live studio audience. I still remember all those old songs (and most of the hand movements).

Rock Band

I returned to my roots recently and performed with a live band - this time channeling my inner rock star. For three years we raised money for our local school district at a Battle of the Bands held at the downtown venue, The Bowery Ballroom. We even won the coveted trophy one year.
